Angel of the South, 2016
Reclaimed wood and glass
Reclaimed wood and glass
Angel of the South is an exploration of the interplay between the material and the spiritual, the ephemeral and the eternal.
The material used resonates with the voices and stories of the people who lived their lives around the original objects, and in transforming it into a new, higher purpose, an unwritten history is preserved.
The figure has a red heart through which light passes, and acts as a symbol of protection and hope for us as a city and a country. Just as cast-off materials can have new life, beauty and meaning as an artwork, there is also hope for us as eternal spirits to be transformed.
The work forms a connection with Antony Gormley’s maquette Angel or the North in the NGA sculpture garden, as well as with the giant original on the British countryside.
